यह उपाधि इन्हें प्रथम विश्व युद्ध के दौरान लोगों को सेना में भर्ती होने के लिए प्रोत्साहित करने के लिए दिया था ।
इसके कारण लोगों ने गांधी को भर्ती कराने वाला सार्जेण्ट कहना शुरू किया ।
13 अप्रैल, 1919 ई. में हुए जलियाँवाला बाग हत्याकाण्ड के विरोध में इन्होंने यह उपाधि वापस कर दी थी ।
