World Heritage Day is observed on Sunday, and it is a day to celebrate monuments and sites around the world. The International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) celebrates the day in order to promote the preservation and appreciation of cultural heritage.
Various activities are undertaken to support this goal.
The day was first observed in 1983 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The 22nd General Conference of UNESCO recognized the event as a world event.
