Every year this annual event is celebrated to honor Professor Dr. Hiralal Chaudhury and his colleague Alikunhi for their contribution to the successful induced breeding of large carp on 10 July 1957 at Angul in Odisha for the first time in the country by administering carp pituitary hormone extract in large carp breeding.
The technology was later standardized and refined by developing synthetic hormones for the production of high-quality seeds across the country.
The pioneering work of induced breeding over the years has helped to transform the growth of the aquaculture sector from traditional to intensive aquaculture practices, leading to the success of the modern aquaculture industry.
